Other ways to classify neurons are their function (motor, sensor, etc.) or neurotransmitters (messengers transmitting signals: acetylcholine, dopamine, GABA, etc.). The terminal buttons form connections with other neurons, synapses, where the information is transmitted from one cell to another. The myelin sheath is formed by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (everything besides the brain and spinal cord). It helps to insulate the electrical signal of the neurons and allows for faster transmission of the signal that jumps from one node of Ranvier to the next. Fascinatingly, axons can reach a length of up to about 180 cm (6 feet)! 🤯
